Inburgering - newest developments

April 2, 2020

The Corona virus has also affected the implementation of the new Inburgeringswet (Law on Integration). It was the intention to start the new legislation on January 1st, 2021 but DUO has announced that it has been postponed until July 1st, 2021.

The new rules for Inburgering will apply only to those who are required to start their Inburgering after July 1st, 2021. So if you already received a letter from DUO stating that you are obliged to take the Inburgering Exam - or expect to receive one before July next year – there is nothing to worry about. You can still take your exams on level A2.

Not everyone is obliged to do the Inburgering Exam. It may depend on your status and your personal situation. But if you have been living here for five years and you are thinking about getting a permanent residence permit or naturalisation – you will have to do the Inburgering Exam first. In that case it would be wise to do so before July next year to avoid the dreaded B1 level.

Kickstart School is well aware of the fact that all these changes and insecurities may give rise to many questions. We had planned to hold information evenings where you could ask all you wanted to know, but due to the Corona virus we had to cancel these. Also, DUO informs us in their communications that there is no further information available at the moment. But you can always mail your question to or check our FAQs below.

We will keep you posted on all new developments.

Stay safe and healthy!
