Inburgering Exam - Important updates

January 2, 2020

Important updates for anyone who is planning (or is obliged) to take the Inburgerings exam.

First - ONA exemption

It is possible to skip the Oriëntatie Nederlandse Arbeidsmarkt (ONA) exam (https://inburgeren.nl). These are the conditions for the exemption:

  1. In the 12 months preceding the date of your request you must have held a regular paying job for at least 6 months, with a minimum of 48 hours per month (± 12 hours per week). Freelance work is not acceptable.
  2. The company you work for is obliged to pay taxes in the Netherlands.

NB: The data supplied in your request will be checked with the Dutch Belastingdienst.

These are the links to the DUO site where you can find the form to request an exemption: https://www.inburgeren.nl/nieuwsberichten/vrijstelling-ona.jsp and https://www.inburgeren.nl/images/aanvraag-vrijstelling-orientatie-op-de-nederlandse-arbeidsmarkt.pdf. You can also find information on the ONA exemption by logging in with your Digid at the following address: https://www.inburgeren.nl/nieuwe-regels-ona.jsp

If you request exemption from the ONA, it may take a few weeks before getting an answer.

Second - Scheduling your writing exam

In the past months DUO was targeted by hackers trying to access the writing exams. Exam questions could be found all over social media. To prevent further irregularities DUO has decided to restrict the writing exams to Thursdays only in one large sitting. This will most certainly affect the availability of exam dates for your writing exam, so please take that into account when you register with DUO.

Third - Increasing the language level

This is the last year that the Inburgerings exam is targeted at an A2 level. The Minister van Sociale Zaken en Werkgelegenheid has decided to change this level to B1 as from January 2021.
